Why do you cross the border every morning?

Why do you cross the border every morning?
Is the ringgit not good enough for you
Or is the dollar too good to be true.
Why do you cross the border every morning
The sea is just a piece of blue.

Why do you cross the border every morning?
Is Malaysia not good enough for you
Or is the ringgit not big enough for you
Your gold ring gleams against your darkened skin
Your passport, your sling bag
They carry your precious things.

Why do you cross the border every morning?
Or does the border cross you instead
Is the wife waiting at home
And the debt still unpaid
Is this why you cross the border every morning.

Why do you cross the border every morning?
Do the children have mouths to feed
Because every day you make this leap
And the dollar drops into their mouths
Turning into ringgit down their throats
Into their bellies and into growth.

Why do you cross the border every morning?
Your pale white skin and big sampo kong
Black framed glasses and big Samsung phone
Why do you cross the border for this?
The grass is greener but it comes at a price
It costs you your time, your youth, your life.

Japanese slippers beneath long blue jeans
Your Gucci sling bag across your hips
You’re young and you’re full of energy
Your mum, did she tell you to come?
Tomorrow, you repeat.
